1. This action was successful!   NOW Sonoma endorsedThe Evelyn Cheatham Effective IOLERO Ordinance, which is appearing as Measure P on the November ballot. The mail-in ballots have been sent out by the Voter's Registrar Office and it is recommended this year to vote early.

Measure P - Vote Yes

For more than twenty years, community members have been working towards achieving effective community oversight of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. After the killing of Andy Lopez by a sheriff’s deputy, a partial victory was achieved with the County’s creation of the Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach (IOLERO). But the office was created without the tools to be effective - no subpoena power, no independent investigatory power, no requirement that the Sheriff’s Office cooperate and not enough money to do the job. Measure P provides the remedy.

The Sonoma County Chapter of NOW, along with the ACLU of Northern California, which took two months extensively evaluating this measure, endorsed The Evelyn Cheatham Effective IOLERO Ordinance.

Thank you for getting out the vote for Measure P. This passed ballot measure amends and expands the existing Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and  Outreach (IOLERO) Ordinance adopted in 2016 by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, and will result in a more independent, transparent, and effective civilian oversight office.
